To foster a global mindset, CKYC students are strongly encouraged to participate in exchanges, study tours and service-learning experiences in other countries as well as in Mainland China.
- Service Learning Programs and Volunteer Teaching
Since 2015, Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC) has organized service learning programs every year to foster the students’ sense of social responsibility, civic engagement, leadership skills, teamwork, and communication skills.
In May 2015, a group of CKYC students went to An Hiep village in Vietnam and provided a series of interactive English lessons to the local primary school students. In addition, the group also built 6 water tanks for the local villagers to solve the urgent needs of fresh water supply in the dry season.
From 2016 to 2019, CKYC joined the Summer Service and Learning Program in Rural China (SSLP) led by Tsinghua University four years in a row. We had sent 53 students in total to 25 different rural districts in China in these four years. The Program brought knowledge, encouragement and warmth to the children in these impoverished areas. In additional to gaining a much deeper understanding of rural China, the participants also benefited from the cross-cultural exchange with other students from Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Mainland and overseas. Many of them reflected that the SSLP is a rewarding and potentially life-changing experience.
In support of the Macao government’s poverty alleviation project for Congjiang county in Guizhou , CKYC had established a partnership with Basha primary school in Congjiang in 2019. A group of 11 students went to this school for a one week’s volunteer teaching program in May 2019. The program aimed to foster students’ social responsibility and dedication to serve and to give back to society, to enhance students’ understanding of the culture and development of the southwestern part of China, and to deepen students’ sense of belonging to the Motherland. The student volunteers devised a varied and diversified educational program for the local students, including English and science classes, and intercultural communication exercises, to spark their interest in learning and encouraged them to pursue higher education (hopefully at UM!). Our students also visited local families and learnt about the culture of the local minorities such as the Miao tribe. In addition, several old notebook computers, books, as well as other learning resources were donated to the school.
