A few days ago, Leng Wei’an, a student of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme at the University of Macau, together with Professor Lian Zhaotong, the Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Business Administration, and his doctoral student Xiao Hua, visited Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC). Several students majoring in Business Intelligence and Data Analysis (BIDA) greeted them and Mr. Leng shared an actual case of big data analysis in the market.

Mr. Leng, a DBA student since 2020, is also the boss of a well-known e-commerce company in Ningbo. With annual sales of over 100 million yuan, he has been following the trend of e-commerce platforms, from Taobao Tmall to Jingdong Mall, and then to the short live video platform of TikTok. Last weekend, Mr. Leng attended class at the University of Macau. During lunch time, Professor Lian and Mr. Leng came to CKYC and had lunch with some students from CKYC. Master of CKYC, Prof. Janny Leung warmly welcomed the visitors to CKYC. After lunch, there are still lots of things to talk about, and the group went to the senior common room of the college to continue the discussion.

Mr. Leng used the large smartboard in the room to directly log on to a website used to analyze the data in TikTok and introduce the latest trends in the e-commerce industry. He also demonstrated how the current e-commerce industry and the Internet industry use data to analyze products, make decisions, and compete on the popular platforms, such as TikTok, Kuaishou, and bilibili. Using his company’s business on TikTok as an example, he showed real-time customer volume of the company on the platform and shared how his company’s decision-making team is guided by successful cases and how to compete with peers to establish a more complete business model. Mr. Leng also mentioned that his company is also using course related to data analysis to train employees in related fields and encouraged BIDA students to work hard to learn the fundamental knowledge of data analysis. During the discussion, Prof. Lian inspired students to think about how to flexibly apply the knowledge learned in academic and professional courses to practice. Prof. Lian said that from the presentation of Mr. Leng, we can clearly know the impact of various factors on the data flow and the sales of goods through the collection and analysis of data, and can then select hot products and optimal marketing methods according to data. There is no doubt that data analysis is such a vital tool in today’s business.

This sharing was an eye-opening experience for BIDA students; they all expressed that they were encouraged by Mr. Leng and had a clearer understanding of the broad prospects of BIDA now. The students are very grateful to Prof. Lian for the opportunity to contact with the predecessors, and also very grateful to Mr. Leng for sharing. At last, they all hope that the Faculty and College can provide more similar opportunities to students.
