The fourth “Greater Bay Area Cup” Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Financial Mathematics Modeling Competition was held from the 1st to the 8th November, 2023. The event attracted over a thousand participants from the universities all over the world. Jointly organized by Guangdong Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Center for Applied Mathematics, the competition aimed to foster innovative research in the application of mathematical modeling in finance, promote the integration of digital finance, digital currency, and smart finance with traditional financial investment, and to nurture future talents in financial technology with an international perspective.

A team of senior students from the University of Macau, formed by Gong Jinqi from Choi Kau Yau College and Faculty of Science and Technology majoring in Statistics and Data Science, Wang Chen from the Faculty of Education majoring in Mathematics Education, and Choi Wan Ioi from the Faculty of Science and Technology majoring in Applied Mathematics, stood out under the guidance of Professor Liu Zhi from the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mathematics. They clinched the first prize at the fourth “Greater Bay Area Cup” Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Financial Mathematics Modeling Competition in 2023, and won the championship for Question B and the overall runners-up of the event. The team was also awarded the special prize – the Silver Medal for Innovation (top 0.17%).

At the awards ceremony held in Shenzhen, the UM team was invited by the organizer to deliver an acceptance speech. CKYC Student Gong Jinqi, as the sole representative of the winners, shared the experience of the competition, and expressed gratitude towards their advisor and the family and friends who gave support.

The team expressed that the competition was a valuable experience that not only enhanced their professional skills but also strengthened their understanding of teamwork and innovative thinking. Motivated by this award, they will continue to refine and expand their knowledge, seek innovative breakthroughs, and contribute to the development of UM, the Greater Bay Area, and our country in the future.
