On March 2nd, 2021, Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC) held the 3rd academic lecture for the new semester, called “Reconstructing Habits for Developing Learning Potential.” Professor Audrey Sung from the Faculty of Education was the guest speaker, and Dr. Li Wai Chung, Residential Fellow of CKYC, was the moderator for the lecture, which attracted a large number of students from different Faculties.

There are three main parts in the lecture. From the cognitive structure of the human brain and its related theoretical perspective, Professor Sung firstly expounded the important functions of “habit” in the dynamic relationship between a human’s brain and actions, which emphasizes the importance of habit formation. Secondly, based on the theory that creating pleasure is conductive to habit building, Professor Sung introduced three scientific approaches for college students to reconstruct their habits: setting up situations, repetition, and rewards. Finally, Professor Sung further explained in detail five habits that can improve learning, namely, the habit of effective use of time, the habit of writing, the habit of visualization, the habit of doing exercises, and the habit of positive thinking. Professor Sung expected that the above habits could help students to improve their learning and further develop their learning potential. After the lecture, Professor Sung recommended some authoritative academic works in the related fields to the students and encouraged them to “create new habits to change their lives from now on”.

The lecture presented by Professor Sung is humorous, logical, and rigorous, which describes the complex academic theory in an approachable way. The lecture is pertinent to the current needs of students; it does not only bring profound inspiration to students, but also provides specific suggestions and approaches for them to develop good habits. It is believed that it is of great help for students to promote their learning in the future!
