A total number of 8 students and teacher of CKYC African drum team went to the nursing house called Asilo de Betânia located in Macau on Saturday afternoon, April 29th, 2023, visiting the elderly there as well as performing African drum for them.

In order to prepare for the visit, the African drum team had trained multiple times throughout April. On the day of the visit, the African drum team arrived at the nursing house at 4 p.m. and was warmly welcomed by the elderly and workers. As the beginning of the visit, the teacher and students performed an African drum song, providing the elderly with a basic understanding of this kind of music. Then, one of the students introduced the elderly to African drum and encouraged them to join the performance by patting some parts of their own body as well as singing some simple lyrics. After that, the elderly and the drum team successfully performed a song together. When the performance was finished, the students took the drums to the elderly and taught them to play the drum by themselves. The activity came to an end around 5 p.m. and the drum team left the nursing house wild with joy.

This activity was more than meaningful, through which the members of the African drum team made great progress in the RC Competencies of Cultural Engagement, Teamwork and Collaboration and Responsible Citizenship. One of the team members said he didn’t have opportunity to participate in similar activities when in high school and that through this experience, he had a better knowledge of community service and also gained real happiness from serving the community.
