Choi Kai Yau College of University of Macau and Sacred Heart Canossian College (English section) jointly organized a beach cleaning activity earlier, supporting by Green Future, a non-government organization. The event was held at a wild and beautiful beach near Tam Kung Temple in Coloane. More than 30 students and staff from the two schools joined this event.

After receiving gloves and rubbish bags, participants were divided into several groups and started to clean the beach. What makes this beach different is that it has a lot of granite, and many oyster shells could be found here. Despite the rugged terrain on the way, all participants worked hard for two hours and cleaned most of the garbage on the beach. At last, the leader from Green Future guided all participants to categories and count the amount of garbage. The top 4 litter types on the beach were glass shards, food packaging, plastic bottles, and styrofoam.

This activity aims to not only enhance students’ awareness of marine conservation, but also to emphasize the importance of reducing the use of plastics, styrofoam, and disposable food packages etc. The harm we do to the environment will ultimately make ourselves suffer. The job of protecting Macau’s environment starts with you and me.
