Choi Kai Yau College has collected second-hand daily supplies left by the graduates in June every year and gathered them in Room G024. After the items have been classified and tidied up, the free market opens to CKYC freshmen and returning students in August during orientation period.  The students can get daily necessities for free in the market, which is not only eco-friendly but also makes it convenient for the students. The free market has received very positive feedback from the students. There are many popular items such as, adapters, small appliances, hangers, cleaning tools, buckets and basin, and rubbish bins, etc. All items are still in good condition and have found their new life in the Market. One freshmen said that the market is handy and free.  She hope every freshmen can enjoy “shopping” in this market and the college should hold this every year in future.

The College Master, Professor Janny Leung initiated the free market since 2020. It has become a special orientation tradition of CKYC. The main purpose of this activity is to recycle supplies and emphasize the sense of belonging of the new students to the College. The used books of the graduates will be collected and placed in the college library. College will also donate the old beddings and clothes to charity organizations in Macau. Recycling old things and making them more useful for new owner is a unique tradition of CKYC students.
