In order to deepen the teachers’ and students’ understanding of the role of immunity in the human body, Choi Kai Yau College held a lecture on “Preventing and Fighting  Epidemics, Always and Everywhere” on February 25. It was our honor that Professor Chen Xin, Interim Director of the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences at the University of Macau agreed to be the speaker. He holds both a degree of Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and also a PhD degree in Immunology, and has made great achievements in the research of molecular regulation mechanisms of the immune system.

This reporter thinks that, in the face of epidemic diseases, improving immunity is key, and immunity is the best doctor. Regarding the current epidemic, how should one strengthen one’s immunity?

During the illuminating talk, Prof. Chen discussed the following:

  1. Evolution of the novel coronavirus from animal hosts to infect human.
  2. The role of Chinese medicine in preventing the epidemic of novel coronavirus.
  3. Wise health regimen to battle against the novel coronavirus.
  4. Ways to increase immunity against disease.
  5. The role of vitamin D in novel coronavirus prevention and therapy.

If we can live in conformity with nature and adapt our lifestyle according to the environs, if we do not overwork and balance work and leisure, if we can have a regular and balanced diet, then we are living wisely and can strengthen our immune ability. The lecture clearly explains the mechanism and importance of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the clinical treatment of human diseases, and also provides a clear picture of the reliable scientific basis for the pathology of the novel coronavirus and other infectious diseases that threaten human health.

In one short hour, the audience gained a lot of understanding of the novel coronavirus and its treatment, and a lot of advice on health habits to boost one’s immunity. Many found the lecture very rewarding and beneficial.
