From April 2nd to 6th, Prof. Qi Yaning, Associate Master of Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC), led 11 students to Shanghai for the “2025 Urban and Cultural Development (Shanghai Stop)” program. The event brought together students and representatives from residential colleges, including Fengru College (Beihang University), Meng Xiancheng College (East China Normal University), Chongshi College (Xi’an Jiaotong University), and CKYC (University of Macau) at the Minhang Campus of East China Normal University. Together, they explored “Urban Development and Culture”, fostering cross-regional collaboration among young scholars.
Opening Ceremony: A Journey of Shared Growth
On April 2nd, teachers and students from the four colleges gathered in Shanghai for ice-breaking activities and the opening ceremony. Professor Wu Wei, Master of Meng Xiancheng College, welcomed participants, stating, “Over the past seven years, this program has become a vital platform for broadening horizons and stimulating critical thinking. We hope students will deeply observe Shanghai’s urban dynamics, experience multicultural exchange, and build lasting friendships.”
Exploring Innovation at the Shanghai Free Trade Zone
On April 3rd, students visited the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, gaining insights into Shanghai’s role as an international economic hub. They later explored the International College of Software Engineering of East China Normal University (ECNU), discussing technology-integrated education with faculty and peers.
Cultural Immersion: Crafting Qingtuan for Qingming Festival
On April 4th, the program moved to ECNU’s Putuo Campus, where students joined international students in a traditional Qingtuan-making workshop. This hands-on experience deepened their appreciation for Chinese cultural heritage and fostered cross-cultural connections.
Thematic Field Visits: Urban and Cultural Exploration
On April 5th, students split into five groups (technology, economy, humanities, arts, and architecture) for in-depth field visits across Shanghai. From tech parks and historic neighborhoods to financial centers and art galleries, they examined the balance between urban growth and cultural preservation.
Presentations and Closing Ceremony
On April 6th, each group presented their findings on Shanghai’s urban and cultural development. At the closing ceremony, Ms. Un Sam I, CKYC Resident Tutor, reflected, “This program has expanded students’ perspectives and strengthened ties among our colleges. Through hands-on learning, they’ve gained a deeper appreciation for urban development and cultural heritage—core to our holistic education philosophy.”
A Seven-Year Legacy of Cross-Regional Collaboration
Since its inception, the Intercollegiate Exchange Program among Four Universities has evolved into a well-established initiative, fostering dialogue and innovation among students. By uniting Beijing, Shanghai, Shaanxi, and Macao, it has created a unique cross-regional residential college community, driving diversified development in Chinese higher education. Each year, this gathering upholds the spirit of “integrating knowledge with action,” allowing diverse cultures to inspire intellectual exchange.
