On January 30th, 2021, the House Association (HA) of Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC) held a leadership training for the new semester. The aim of the training is twofold. At the individual level, the activities were designed for building self-confidence and improving  communications skills; they also help each participant reflect on his/her roles and responsibilities within the HA.  Collectively, the activities foster co-operation and trust, and help to build team spirit among the officers and all the Working Groups members.

The event began on time at 2 p.m., with social worker Yahan leading all CKYC HA members to play warm-up games and team-based games. The games “Racing Track” and “Pipeline Transportation” rely on the tacit understanding between team members. Although some teams failed many times in the middle, none of the players gave up and managed to get the ball to the finish line. The games “Traffic Jam” and “Domino Casting” require intelligent strategizing and problem solving, and highlight the importance of setting clear common goals, trust, teamwork, division of labor, and how mutual cooperation and learning allow the team to achieve more. Finally, all participants reflected on their feelings and gains of this training, and how to apply what has been learned to HA’s work in the future. Throughout the whole training, all members were very focused and actively involved. All agreed that by joining the HA, they not only learned new skills, but also gained valuable experience and friendship.

After that, the HA’s five Working Groups, the Vice-President and President reviewed the work of the last semester and presented a vision for the new semester. Finally, the HA advisor, Resident Fellow Dr. Li Wai Chung, provided valuable feedback in her address to the HA members, and Master Prof. Janny Leung also indicated her expectations and encouragement in her concluding remarks.
