On April 21st, CKYC African drum team went to the Complexo de Serviços de Apoio Ao Cidadão Sénior Retribuição located in Coloane to provide community service.

On the event day, the African drum team arrived at the venue at 11 a.m. and began the 1-hour long activity. First, the students and teachers performed an African drum song named “kuku”, providing the elderly with a basic understanding of this musical form. Then, two team members introduced the two different types of African drum “Dundun” and “Djembe” to the elderly as well as taught them to recognize the high and low pitch of African drum through the warm-up game of clapping their hands and legs. The teachers and students also taught the elderly to sing and performed the song “Djole” with them. In the end, the team members brought the drums to the elderly and taught them to play the drums by themselves.

This activity is of vital significance, through which the students gained the opportunity to participate in community service and contribute to the society. Their college competencies in dimensions of cultural engagement, teamwork and collaboration and service and leadership have also been enhanced.
