Thirty-four students from Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC) at the University of Macau embarked on an immersive educational journey, visiting both the Macau Animal Specimen Museum and the “Cat Paradise” stray cat rescue center on Feb 15, 2025. This innovative off-campus program integrated scientific exploration with humanitarian care, significantly enhancing participants’ understanding of ecological conservation and animal welfare. The dual-site visit commenced at 2:00 PM with a rotational group system. The first group at Cat Paradise, operated by Anima – Macau Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, received hands-on training in stray cat rehabilitation. Under professional guidance, students mastered essential skills including dietary management, shelter sanitation, and basic feline health monitoring. “Witnessing the full cycle from rescue to adoption has reshaped my perception of life dignity,” a CKYC student reflected, noting the program’s impact on promoting adoption over commercial purchase.Concurrently, the second group explored biodiversity at the Macau Animal Specimen Museum. Housing over 500 specimens of regional flora and fauna, the museum’s interactive exhibits provided three-dimensional insights into Macau’s unique ecosystems. “The holographic displays allowed unprecedented observation of endemic species like the Black-faced Spoonbill,” remarked student Luis, highlighting the museum’s innovative educational approach. At 3:30 PM, the groups rotated venues to ensure comprehensive learning. The second session featured simulated rescue operations and veterinary workshops, with participants designing adoption campaigns. The program aligns with Macau’s vision as a World Center of Tourism and Leisure. By leveraging local conservation resources, we’re cultivating next-generation leaders in sustainable development. It improved biodiversity literacy and stronger support for animal protection legislation among participants.
