CKYC Master’s Tea Lecture with Dr. Chester Kam “Veganism”

CKYC non-resident fellow, Dr. Chester Kam, is invited to conduct CKYC Master’s Tea Lecture with the topic of “Why Veganism is Rising in Popularity and What Benefits Veganism can Bring to You” on April 26, 2018.

Dr. Kam shares the basic knowledge and the trend of “Veganism” in the world with our students. He explains “Veganism” is a way of living to avoid all animals for food and other purposes. Dr. Kam also illustrates the survey result which was conducted in the UK to tell the reason why people are increasingly becoming “Vegans”. Zero animal fats, lower cancer risk, bone health, protection from stroke and heart disease, animal cruelty and so forth are the crucial reasons.

When it comes to the topic of nutritional balance, you might ask, “So, if we go vegan, could we get the sufficient nutrition without animal products?” The answer is SURE! Says, protein, which is a kind of nutrients mainly from animal products, but the foods made from soybeans are some of the highest vegetarian sources of protein. Tofu is a non-animal product and it is a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that the body needs for growth and repair.

From the lecture, our students learn that people can eat and live healthily while being on a vegan diet as veganism protects people from major and serious diseases common among meat-eaters. Perhaps, this is the evening you start to change your dietary habit.

蔡繼有書院院長茶聚:與甘俊生博士一起探討“素食主義”

蔡繼有書院非駐院導師甘俊生博士為書院院生澳大師生帶來了一場別開生面的院長茶聚,是次講座的題目為:素食主義為何廣受歡迎及其益處。

甘俊生博士首先為大家介紹了“素食主義”的基本知識及其在現今世界上的流行趨勢。他解釋道“素食主義”是一種避免食用和使用以動物為原料的生活態度。同時,甘博士引用英國近來一項有關“素食主義”的研究報告為例,其調查結果指出“素食主義者”正有上升的趨勢。零動物脂肪、低患癌風險、骨骼健康、有效預防中風和心臟病、減低虐待動物等等都是“素食主義”廣泛盛行的主要原因。

你可能會問:“如果我們成為素食主義者,那麼我們能夠從非動物類的食品中獲得均衡且足夠的營養嗎?”答案是:當然可以!以蛋白質為例,蛋白質主要來自動物製品食物,但原來由黃豆所製的食品中含有極其豐富的植物蛋白。例如,豆腐是一種非動物製品食物、卻又是一種完全的蛋白,含有九種人體必須的氨基酸,有助人體的生長及自我修復。

總括來說,甘博士讓同學們學習到純素主義可讓人們吃得健康、活得健康。或許,這個傍晚過後你也會開始考慮改變你的膳食習慣。
